Retail Recruitment on the increase as shops prepare for Christmas

For retailers, the most uncertain Christmas in a number of years is just around the corner and with recruitment in general picking up, the Retail recruitment  sector is being kept very busy right now! Shops are looking for additional staff to cover the late night opening times that you generally see around this time of the year and as such, the hunt for good candidates is also on the increase.

I spoke with Shane Hawkins from C2 Retail Recruitment who had this to say.

Since early November, we started to see an sharp increase in the number of clients contacting us with requirements for additional staff. The feeling in the market is that shops are hoping to see a busier Christmas period and are clearly preparing for this. Already there are some shops staying open until Midnight to try and coax in late night shoppers who do not wish to struggle through the crowds.

However, the economic climate has not been kind to all and affected lots of recruitment agencies with many unfortunately closing down. C2 Recruitment, however, have been going from strength to strength during this time, something the managing director puts down to “exceptional customer service and a thorough understanding the market“.

Christmas Sales Rise

This year the Christmas sales also seem to have started early – and in greater quantities! Around every corner there are now pre-Christmas sales happening – bargains can be picked up early, further fuelling the feeling that shops will see more trade this year, something retailers are undoubtedly hoping for. This will also be a contributing factor to the increase in requirements that C2 are seeing right now.

However, with some toy shortages already predicted, shoppers will still be forced to go on-line to try and find companies stocking some of the more sought after products this year, something that we see more and more of as confidence levels rise with ‘internet shoppers’.

So where will you be doing your shopping this year? With so many pre-Christmas sales around, it seems as though it is worth a look to see what is available – From Jewellery to home goods, clothing and toys, there is something to entice everyone right now.
